HANCEVILLE, ALA. – Chad Bryan has lived in Oneonta for six years and was eager to
visit the Open House held recently at the Wallace State-Oneonta Technical Center,
an event featuring tours and information about the mechatronics, welding and machine
tool technology programs at the facility.
“I’ve always been interested in these fields. It’s a matter of finding the best fit.
It’s a blessing Wallace State-Oneonta offers these programs in town,” Bryan said.
The Oneonta Technical Center has undergone three expansions to meet demand since Wallace
State first opened the doors in Oneonta in 2016. The welding program, the first Wallace
State applied technologies program in Oneonta, has expanded to 30 booths. In 2019,
the Wallace State Academic Center was added to allow the expansion of technical programs
and to accommodate additional general studies and academics classes.
“It’s important to let the public see what we have to offer. They drive by this building
every day and all they may see is the outside. It’s important to have events like
this where we can open the doors and invite prospective students or parents of prospective
students to learn more about our programs,” said newly-appointed Wallace State-Oneonta
director Lauren Wilson, who will assume the role on May 17.
Fillip Hepp was also among the Open House attendees.
“My grandfather and father transitioned from tool and die to mechatronics in their
careers, and I want to follow the same path,” said Hepp, who works at Southern Fixture
and Gauge in Oneonta. “It’s not about the money. It’s about the knowledge and the
challenge. This location is super convenient, and it would be silly not to capitalize
on Wallace State-Oneonta being in my backyard.”
Individuals attending the event were also able to learn about admission and financial
aid procedures, scholarship, and dual enrollment opportunities for high school students
as well as GED, TRIO, ESL, short-term training and other programs for adult learners.
Additionally, the Alabama Community College System and Reliance Worldwide Corporation
in Cullman had representatives on hand.
